Airport Ground Transportation
It's advisable to accept rides only from authorized ground-transportation agents; contact ground-transportation information counters for agent listing. For additional information on transportation to and from John F. Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark airports, contact the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey (m 800-247-7433, www.panynj.gov).
TAXIS
Taxi service is available outside each terminal. Only yellow taxi cabs with roof medallions showing the taxi number are authorized by the City of New York to pick up passengers on the street. Passengers at Kennedy and LaGuardia airports should wait in line and allow a uniformed dispatcher to hail the next available cab. Fares to Manhattan: from JFK, $45 flat rate to any point in Manhattan (tolls not included); from LGA, $20-$30 (average metered rate plus tolls); from EWR, $60-$75 (average metered rate plus tolls). A 50C surcharge is added to all metered fares nightly 8pm-6am; and a $1.00 peak-time surcharge weekdays 4pm-8pm.
RAIL SERVICE
Air Train Newark is a new airport rail service (operates daily Sam-midnight; $12; m 888-397-4636; www. airtrainnewark.com) that provides a rail connection from Newark airport to Amtrak (see Trains, below), New Jersey Transit (800-772-2222; www.njtransit. com) and PATH (Port Authority Trans-Hudson) existing rail systems. The new Air Train JFK light-rail system (877-535-2478; www.panynj. com/airtrain) links JFK's eight terminals to PATH subway and bus lines (800-234-7284; www.panynj.gov/path) to New York City and Long Island.
SHUTTLES & LIMOUSINES
Super Shuttle offers interairport service as well as service to and from Manhattan by van (sharedride) 24hrs daily ( $13-$22;<s 212-258-3826; www.supershuttle.com).
New York Airport Service express bus runs between Kennedy and LaGuardia airports and Grand Central Railroad Terminal (free transfer to Midtown hotels), and between Penn Station and Port Authority Bus Terminal daily (from airports: 6am-midnight, to airports: JFK6am-11pm, LGA 7:40am-11pm;JFK: $ 15, LGA: $ 12; 718-875-8200; www. nyairportservice.com).
Olympia Trails Airport Express Bus (daily 4am-midnight; every 10-15min;$12;® 877-863-9275; www.coachusa.com) runs from Newark to Pennsylvania Railroad Station, Grand Central Terminal and Port Authority Bus Terminal.
Carey Limousine (reservations required; ® 202-895-1200 or 800-336-0646; www.ecarey.com) offers chauffeur-driven cars at fixed rates between Manhattan and Kennedy ($127-$160), LaGuardia ($107-$140) and Newark ($127-$160) airports (rates do not include tolls, parking or gratuity). Other chauffeur-driven car services are available at the airport transportation counter via self-service telephones.
RENTAL CARS
Most major rental-car agencies run shuttle buses from the airport terminals to their lots.
PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION
From Kennedy: MTA A train from Howard Beach station (free shuttle service from airport). From LaGuardia: MTA M60 bus.
AMTRAK
800-872-7245, accessible in North America only; outside North America, contact your local travel agent; www.amtrak.com. Amtrak rail service offers a relaxing alternative to flying or driving. Reserve in advance to ensure availability and the best fares. Overnight trains offer sleeping accommodations. Daily service to Manhattan's Pennsylvania Railroad Station (Seventh Ave. & W. 32ndSt.) is provided on the Adirondack (from Montreal), the Maple Leaf (from Toronto), the Silver Service (from Miami), the Lake Shore Limited (from Chicago), and the Crescent (from New Orleans). The Metroliner high-speed, all-reserved rail shuttle connects Washington, DC and New York City in three hours. Travelers from Canada should inquire with their local travel agents about Amtrak/VIARail connections. North America Rail Pass permits unlimited travel in the US and Canada within 30 days. USA RailPass (not available to US or Canadian citizens or legal residents) offers unlimited travel within Amtrak-designated regions at discounted rates; 15- and 30-day passes are available.
LOCAL SERVICE
Rail service into Manhattan's Grand Central Railroad Terminal (E. 42nd St. & Park Ave.) is provided by Metro-North (212-532-4900 or 800-638-7646; www.mta.nyc.ny.us/mnr), which runs between Manhattan and New Haven, CT and Poughkeepsie, NY. Both the Long Island Railroad (718-217-5477; www.mta.nyc.ny.us/lirr) and New Jersey Transit {800-772-2222; www.njtransit.com) operate out of Pennsylvania Railroad Station. PATH (Port Authority Trans-Hudson) rail lines ( 800-234-7284; www.panynj. gov/path) connect Manhattan with many cities in New Jersey.
Buses
The Port Authority Bus Terminal
(W. 42nd St. & Eighth Ave.; 212-564-8484), the city's main bus terminal, is used by long-distance and commuter services. From here buses to the area's three major airports leave regularly. Airline ticket counters are located on the main floor of the building. Some travelers may find long-distance bus travel uncomfortable due to the lack of sleeping accommodations, but in general, fares are lower than other forms of public transportation. Greyhound (advance reservations suggested; 800-231-2222; www. greyhound.com) provides access to New York City at a leisurely pace; its Discovery Pass allows unlimited travel for 4-60 days.
