In contrast to its historic exterior, dating to 1898 (look closely: there's no marquis, awning or even a noticeable sign), the inside of The Royalton is daringly modern. Opened in 1988, it's the first New York product of avant-garde hotelier Ian Schrager and designer Philippe Starck. Sleek, well-appointed guest rooms all have VCRs, CD and cassette players, and refrigerator/ minibars. Bathrooms offer slate- and glass-walled showers or five-foot-wide circular tubs. Ultra-hip staffers dress in black.

This stylish budget hotel is one of three New York properties owned by the Citylife Hotel Group. Rooms are decorated in earth tones; many have shared baths, however. Penthouse studios here go for the price of an average room in a Midtown hotel. From the Habitat's location, it's an easy walk to Central Park, 57th Street galleries and Fifth Avenue shopping.

You can't find a better East Side hotel bargain than the Pickwick. What the accommodations lack in size they make up for by being in an upscale neighborhood convenient to Saint Patrick's Cathedral, Grand Central Station, the United Nations and most tourist attractions. Safe-deposit boxes are available in the lobby as is Internet access (25 cents a minute). Most rooms have only showers, and you should bring your own shampoo. Weather permitting, spend some time in the charming rooftop garden enjoying the superb view.

Surround yourself in a Moroccan-style setting right in the middle of Manhattan. This Broadway-Times Square property opened in 1997, and has been offering respite and hospitality to its guests ever since. The recently renovated guest rooms feature comfortable furnishings, as well as high-tech amenities (there's even a telephone in the bathroom). The hotel provides a complimentary continental breakfast and use of a nearby fitness facility at no cost to you.

If you're a theatergoer, you'll love the location of this well-situated inn. When you exit the front door, most of Broadway's theaters are only minutes away on foot. Repeat customers from near and far rave about the friendly staff, the great location and the clean rooms, each with a private bathroom. Guests enjoy a complimentary continental breakfast in a homey, brick-walled space. Be mindful of possible drawbacks, however: the lack of elevators in this four-story building (guests must walk up the stairs) and the 24/7 noise from Times Square (ask for a room away from the street).
Mayfair New York

One of the few family-run hotels in Manhattan, Mayfair New York is located in the heart of Broadway theaters and Times Square nightlife. The entire building is "no smoking." Guest rooms and common areas showcase a collection of rare, historic photos from the Museum of the City of New York. Double-pane windows filter out the street noise. All accommodations come with modern conveniences including high-speed Internet connections, hair dryers and computerized wall safes. Service is extremely friendly.

Sitting directly across from the United Nations, the Millennium offers convenient access to the Midtown business district as well as fashionable East Side restaurants and boutiques. The hotel's spacious and elegantly appointed guest rooms start on the 28th floor and provide breathtaking views of the New York skyline and the East River. Rich tapestries dating back to the 9C adorn the lobbies, corridors and guest accommodations. The Millennium is the only Manhattan hotel to have both an indoor tennis court and a glass-enclosed swimming pool. There's also a currency exchange at the front desk, and a full-service health club and fitness center. The Ambassador Grill restaurant serves as a meeting place for many UN dignitaries.
