Promenade New York

Between Pier A and Whitehall Ferry Terminal.

The waterfront path offers great views of New York Harbor. Among the points of interest that visitors can spot are the Colgate clock and, beside it, Goldman Sachs' glimmering new headquarters in Jersey City; Ellis Island's Beaux-Arts processing center (p 66); the Statue of Liberty (p 62); the docks at the foot of Brooklyn Heights (p 267); the redbrick buildings on Governors Island ( p 68); and the crisscrossing cables of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge ( p 273), linking Staten Island and Brooklyn. You'll notice two prominent memorials: the East Coast Memorial (near the South Ferry terminal) was dedicated in 1963. Eight stark granite walls are engraved with the name, rank, and home state of 4,601 US servicemen who lost their lives in the Atlantic Ocean during World War II. A bronze Art Deco-style eagle stands at the head of the monument. The New York Korean War Veterans Memorial (near the West St. entrance) is a 15ft-tall granite stele (1991) containing within it the carved-out silhouette of an infantryman who represents the "universal soldier." If you look through the cutout toward the water, you can see the Statue of Liberty.
